I love that you can beat the game in a less than ideal fashion, and it's a little fun to go back and fudge the investigations. I like that items take a backseat to the discuss and what feels to be a decent detective story. I like the world that the game inhabits too. Different enough to be interesting, but the magical and spiritual elements take a back seat to the characters. All in all, I'd recommend to anyone looking for an adventure games. I think we need to support the creators to ensure this genre doesn't fade away.. Lamplight City is just about everything I could want in an adventure game. Mysteries to solve, choices to make, pitfalls to avoid, and characters written well enough to care about. Setting wise, it's also a love letter to everything steampunk. If you're a fan of sherlock holmes or thomas edison alike, you'll probably get well invested into the world the game takes place in.Being an adventure game, you'd want the story to shine front and center, and it for sure does. 5 unique cases, 4 individuals, and the 5th which acts as a tie in of little threads from the previous cases, but primarily is a closer to the question from the prologue the game has been teasing the whole way through. Each case is well thought out, with multiple conclusions you're allowed to draw (both right and wrong) and is rife with puzzles of varying difficulty. This in my opinion is one of the few flaws the game has. While the puzzles are smart, finding the clues you need can sometimes be a bit of a pixel hunt. Usually this comes in the form of not being able to go to a new destination, or discuss a specific topic with someone unless and until the you find the minute detail the game has deemed vital to following the plot thread. It never impedes the gameplay too badly, but do expect to pour over every area with a fine toothed comb to complete a case.The art direction for the game is beautiful, and harkens back to a 90's era of point and click graphics. Think gabriel knight or monkey island. It's a style that has a timeless appeal to it, and it's done well and backdropped with beautiful cityscapes. Conversations are carried out in a separate black screen, with animated portraits (fully and well voice acted too!) The portraits look great, and show a range of emotions as characters react to conversation topics.Overall, Lamplight City is an absolute joy of an adventure game. I took my time to enjoy all the little details the world had to offer (and got stumped now and again) and the game ran me about 35 hours. This may vary for you if your goal is to just blitz through the cases, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you did. If you allow it to, the world and characters really come alive. And while the game can sometimes be pixel hunty, it by no means detracts from the overall gameplay. A full recommendation.. A gem for me and a must for every point & click fan!Really good voice acting, music, scenarios and story. The puzzles are really smart and completely reasonable. Not pixel hunting at all. The choice system is a brilliant addition to the genre and also reasonable. It makes you want to keep looking for clues if you are not satisfied with the current suspect.Looking forward to a sequel!. Having played Francisco's game since his first release of Ben Jordan back in the day I have watched his game design skill and story writing skills improve everytime. Not to mention his huge improvements in art and animation which is also truly impressive. This is game is probably his best work to date. It takes all the great elements from his early freeware titles with the shine and polish of his more recent endeavours with Wadjet Eye. Amazing game, still playing through it as we speak - but hey its 4am here in Australia and I've been playing it all night. Did I mention I have to go to work at 8. Kind of shows how engrossing this little gem is.. This game is a work of art, plain and simple. I'm already a fan of Francisco González, but Lamplight City is definitely a step up from A Golden Wake and Shardlight, mechanics-wise. I felt a hiccup when I realized there was no object inventory, but very soon it didn't even bother me because the information you collect in your notebook serves the exact same purpose and feels more natural for this kind of a game. It's grand and mysterious, but not hand-holdy. You are allowed to mess up, and your mess ups remain relevant and affect how you solve puzzles later on. Not to mention I love the alternate history setting. It's an instant recommendation to any mystery or adventure game lover.. Old school detective mystery with retro graphics that brought a lot of nostalgia. Dialogue is fun, voice acting is really good, they emphasize their words not just read them from a script like robots. Thoroughly enjoying it so far, well worth the asking price, casual enough that you can take your time. I did appreciate the autosave though after I blew up some guys boiler,...oops, my bad.Finally finished it, 29 hours and only managed 19 achievements, what a marvellous little gem of a game, absolutely worth the price. i messed up one case (The dead body outside the Raven bar) so I'll have to work out how I screwed that one up.. after finishing the game, I do not think it is a bad game, and I going to change my recomendation, I also see that you have fix the bug that game had. well done.]A very disappointing game and in the following lines I will explain mysefl.This is not a regular point-and-click game because it does not have an inventory and the only thing you can do is talk with other caracters to go on with the plot . This would not be a serious problem if the game was well done, but this is not the case.When you talk to someone, the caracter that you have been talking can get angry and stop answering your questions , for example, when this happens with Dupree's son, the game gets stuck and you can not go on because this bastard does not give you the clues to continue with the game .At first I thought it was my problem,and I need to speak with someone else, but in the forum I saw that other people have the same problem. It's a big fail in a game like this that you have to restart the game. I am going to give another oportunity but if it happens again I am not going to change my opinion of this game.. The latest version is v 1.06 (version number visible on the Settings screen)Major bug fixes are as follows:- Fixed a bug which made Case 1 impossible to declare unsolvable if conversations were failed in a specific order.- Fixed a conversation between Miles and Bill repeating in front of the Spectre Society after getting kicked out- Fixed an issue where returning to Upton’s apartment in Case 5 would trigger the ending encounter prematurely- Fixed a bug where the ambient sound from the coffee house would continue playing if the player made the connection between victims while there.- Fixed the "Thorough" achievement so it should now trigger.- Mac and Linux versions of the game will now remembr the language settings.- Lip sync errors in Linux have been corrected.Previously saved games will still work..
