About This Game Solstice is a very retro wargame, heavily inspired by the classic games Lords of Midnight, Doomdarks Revenge and Sorderon's Shadow. Solstice is not a remake of any of these games but takes its lead from these games to develop a new gaming challenge for lovers of turn-based, menu driven strategy. The artwork is beautiful, the music is too loud and cheerful, the characters are annoying and all are pompous idiots, the story is so-so, the detective plotline is nonexistent, the humour is crude, the drama is far-fetched, the thriller is a joke. This game reminded me why I don't play visual novels, at least made by western developers.. A beautiful game yet taking next to no disc space (some now take too much...) Being so well written to the point it adds humor while being realistic to how much would be used in the real world.Also having a story that makes it very unclear at the beginning and unravelling it by using two characters point of views is a nice and unique way of piecing the strings together to find out how your choices impact what you do. Great work on this master piece Moacube as I only tend to review games that have really given a nice impact on the atmosphere and the story so thank you for bringing this jem to us and I hope you continue to have success and maybe even bring us a continuation to this story be it before or after what happens.. This is it. This is the absolute gem of my game collection. Where do I even start? The breathtaking artwork? The amazing, ear soothing music? The carefully put together, impressively branching story? At its core, Solstice is a mystery story with fantasy elements. The city, protected by a magic dome from freezing winter, is a desolate city of sinister secrets, calculative deceit and passionate love. Don't forget the occasional murder and sabotage. The main characters, Galen and Yani, end up investigating the precarious city. They both have secrets they want to keep. They aren't an open book which is rare for a visual novel protagonist – you aren't in charge of everything. Every choice leads to a believable scenario – they have consequences, both small and big. The romance routes for Galen and Yani are completely optional and dealt with a satisfying manner. Every character in this story is an individual and so lifelike, I can't help but feel deep gratitude to the writers of Moacube.The game offers four endings with multiple variations and each of them are satisfying in their own ways. Even the grim ones, the bad endings, make you really ponder. Is it necessarily bad or good if it ends like it ends? Solstice is an immersive, unforgettable adventure and offers a lot of value for its price. I wholeheartedly recommend it for everyone, even to the ones who don't necessarily feel visual novels to be their thing.. I loved this VN. Absolutely loved it. Loved the warm, beautiful art style, the magic-filled, highly political world, the writing (pretty good dialogue), the enchanting music, the characters (everyone felt "real" to me, with their own motivations, secrets and unique relationships with each other) and the Clue-like concept of a murderer hiding amidst a small community trapped/surrounded by a frozen wasteland. I would recommend Solstice to anyone who loves a good mystery plot, with some magic thrown in. One thing to note: if you like VNs mainly for romance, the romance here is only a small part of the game. Also you don't have any choice on who you can romance. It's pretty much 1 person for each protagonist (you switch between a female and male character, who are each fleshed out quite well). I would have preferred more interactions and developments with whoever you're romancing, but since that's not the main focus of the game, I can understand that. Also, I remember one of the other commenters mentioning 'gratuitous sex and violence', and all I have to say is: Where??? There's kissing and blood, and that's it. Where's my gratuitous sex and violence? Got me all excited for nothing.Anyway, my biggest gripe with Solstice is that it's woefully short. I finished it in less than 10 hours. At $20, you can decide for yourself whether it's worth it or not. You can go back and try out other decisions to see how things would play out differently, but it's not as interesting when you already know who the killer is. It would have been great if there had been more branching possibilities, like revealing a different killer for example. Nevertheless, if you don't mind these points, and you love a good (if short) compelling story revolving around a small group of rich characters, go ahead and pick Solstice up.. Well, I enjoyed most of the Visual Novels I played so far - FREE and Paid ones.This one though... Everytime I try and keep reading, I find myself quitting in 10 minutes. Not sure why but its dialogs get so boring and uninteresting to me that I have no other reasons to continue playing, no matter if the Artworks are actually nice and they pushed on the mistery plot: everything and everybody here is a mistery, maybe I reached more than half novel's lenght and it's all still unclear, not a damn clue; the more people talk with each other and the less you appear to know about them.Then, on the technical side, this game's a mess. Resolution and Steam Overlay are totally broken - You can't even take proper screenshots. Devs know about that, but all I got from them was this.Cannot and won't recommend.. Honestly, I think it's too linear and too benign, not much happens in the first 30 minutes or so to keep you interested for the rest of it. A lot of ready mediocre writing and making choices without really understanding the importance of the choices you make.. I'm a bit sad to give this game a thumbs down but there are a few strongly negative things about this game that deserve it and are compelling me to write this review. Firstly, the technical issues. You'd think that for a visual novel, the chance for bugs and issues would be low but that is not the case. It is convenient that the game auto-saves at times, but only because in only the first 5 hours of playing, the game has crashed inexplicably 4 times. I will just be going along and suddenly the game is gone. Sometimes it happens with no warning, other times it seems to happen when opening or closing the journal. Regardless, it's extremely irritating. There are also issues with the way the text displays, oftentimes jumping out of the text box to scroll all the way across the screen. This makes it very disconcerting when trying to read the text - something you're doing nonstop since this is a visual novel. Secondly, the format issues. Normally, visual novels are written from first person perspective. You play as the main character and are inside their head with access to their thoughts and motivations. This game has 2 'main' characters that you, the player, make choices for, but the game is wholly third person. There are no thoughts ever given to the player outside of small 'journal writing' sections, and key events that the 'main' characters participate in are kept secret from the player. This may work in a novel written from the third person where the reader is learning about the main character and discovering their secrets, but it doesn't work at all when you are supposed to be controlling these characters half the time but the other half of the time, you have no idea what they are up to. The format makes it hard to understand the characters which is just compounded when the game keeps switching perspective between its two leads. Finally, the story issues. I like a mystery story and this game is trying to be that in some ways, but due to the format, it's impossible to 'reason' anything or know what's actually going on when you can't even trust that you know what your main characters are up to. I like the setting of the story in general and the story that it is telling. The side characters are interesting as well. But the way the story is told make it frustrating more than intriguing. If the game absolutely had to be told from two different perspectives, I wish that they could have made the player choose which perspective to play the game from at first and then they are bound to that perspective for the entire game. Then they can replay it a second time to find out what the other character was up to.Anyway, there are definitely some pros about this game which makes me still want to recommend this game to people who accept the above issues. The art is sublime. The backgrounds are really beautiful, but the characters are all really well-drawn too. As others have mentioned, the characters are also quite diverse which is rare but very welcome. Of course there are still more white men than anyone else though, so don't get too excited about it. It's still nice to have some diversity, however. I also find the story to be an interesting one. I just wish that the format didn't hinder the story so much. It really makes me wonder why the developers thought this would be the best way to present their story. Overall, I can't recommend this game to the average player because the cons just detract too much from what could be a really cool story. The technical issues and challenges of the way they chose to present the story break immersion constantly and the format also keeps too much hidden to actually make the story a mystery that the player can solve. However, I think the potential for a great game and story is in this game so if you're curious and willing to deal with the cons, I could recommend this game when it goes on sale for maybe $12 or less. It's worth $15 if you're really desperate for diversity, I suppose, but keep in mind that this is a fantasy setting, so even if there is an Asian-presenting character, or a Black-presenting character, they won't actually be representative of a real-world cultural member of that ethnicity (if you care about more than appearances).
